This feature used to only be for paid Zoom users, but the company made it available to everyone in October 2021.

We’re going to explain how to enable Zoom’s auto-generated captions for your account and meeting.

Step 1: Enable Closed Captioning in Your Zoom Account

Before you can enable auto-generated captions in your meeting, you need to enable closed captioning at your account level. Here’s how:

Go to your Zoom settings (My Account > Settings). In the Meeting tab, click In Meeting (Advanced) on the left sidebar. Slide to enable Closed captioning. Click Enable. Check Allow live transcription service to transcribe meeting automatically. Click Save.

If you’re using an enterprise or team account, you may need to ask your administrator to enable this setting for you.

Step 2: Enable Auto-Generated Captions in Your Zoom Calls

You can now enable auto-generated captions in your Zoom calls. To do this, once in a call:

Click Live Transcript from the bottom menu. Click Enable Auto-Transcription. The captions will immediately begin in the call. To disable, repeat these steps but select Disable Auto-Transcription.

On that menu, you’ll also see the option Allow participants to request Live Transcription. Keep this checked if you want those in the meeting to have the ability to anonymously ask you to enable auto-captions.

Currently, auto-generated captions are only available in English, but Zoom says it wants to expand this to other languages in the future.

Ensure Your Zoom Meetings Work for Everyone

Auto-generated subtitles are one of the best Zoom features that you shouldn’t overlook, especially since it’s free to use. It’ll ensure everyone in your meeting stays on the same page and it requires no effort from you. It’s a no-brainer!
