Basic Requirements
There are some basic requirements for the “Find My Phone” command to work. Your phone must:
Be turned on. Be signed into Google. Have Wi-Fi or mobile data service. Have your phone number tied to your Google Account.
Before you lose your phone (again) you’ll need to set up your device to be connected to your Google Home or Google Home Mini. This varies slightly between Android devices and Apple, but it’s possible to use the “Find My Phone” function with either device.
Find My Phone on Google Home With an Android Device
Setting up your Google Home or Google Home Mini to call your phone only requires a few steps for Android users.
Allow your phone to be visible on Google Play. Go to play. google. com/settings and under Visibility make sure a checkmark appears next to Show in menus which allows your device to be seen. Test it out by saying, “Hey Google, find my phone,” to your nearest Google Home or Google Home Mini speaker. Your speaker will confirm by asking you if it should call the number ending in the last four digits of the number tied to your Google account. Say “Yes,” and Google Home will call your phone. A particularly nice feature for Android devices is that your phone will ring even if it’s on Do Not Disturb mode.
Find My Phone on Google Home With an Apple Device
An Apple Device requires a little more setup than an Android, but “OK Google, find my phone,” will still work for you. Here’s how to make sure your devices are able to be found the next time your phone wanders off.
Make sure that your phone number is tied to your Google account. To double-check open the Google Assistant app, click the Profile Icon at the top right, and then click the Google profile that you’re managing and select Manage your Google Account. Your phone number will be listed under Personal Info & Privacy. If you haven’t already, set up Voice Match by going to Settings in the Google Assistant app. Test it out by saying, “Hey Google, find my phone,” to your nearest Google Home or Google Home Mini speaker and say “Hey Google, find my phone. " Your speaker will confirm by asking you if it should call the number ending in the last four digits of the number tied to your Google account. Say “Yes” and Google Home will call your phone.
If your ringer is turned on, your Apple device should now be ringing, waiting for you to rescue it from under your bed or the bottom of your backpack. However, it only vibrates if you’re on Do Not Disturb or Silent modes.
Happy phone hunting!
