How to Find and Copy a File Path on your iPhone

Each file in iCloud Drive has a specific file path that can be used to specify exactly where a file is located. This file path can be accessed for any file, whether it’s stored locally on your iPhone or stored in iCloud Drive.

To get the file path on your iPhone or iPad:

Open the Files app. Find the specific file that you want to get the file path for. If you don’t know where it is, use the Search option to find it. Long-press on a file and tap Get Info. This should open a page with all the file information, including created and last opened dates. Long press the section called Where (which is the file path) and tap Copy.

This will copy the file path to your Clipboard, which you can now paste anywhere as required.

It’s worth noting that the file path you’ve copied isn’t the exact file path, but a GUI way of showing where the file is located. To change it to an actual file path, you need to paste it and replace the arrows with forward slashes (/), and make sure there are no spaces either side.

For example, iCloud Drive▸Documents▸Sample.jpg should be changed to iCloud Drive/Documents/Sample.jpg.

Using File Paths in Shortcuts

A file path can be used for many purposes, including specific iOS or iPadOS shortcuts that grab and save content from iCloud Drive. This makes the whole process automated, without you having to worry about inputting a file path manually.

Accessing the file path from the Files app provides a quick and efficient way to copy it to the clipboard without having to worry about anything else.
